Do you remember a TV movie many years ago called “Boy in the Bubble” or something like that? I think a young John Travolta was in it and it was based on a true story. It was about this boy that had to stay inside an artificial environment 24 hours a day because his natural immune system didn’t work. Because of that, he could have no exposure to the outside world – it would be too dangerous for him. So this boy was in this bubble thing all the time – he got his schooling, ate his meals, watched tv, etc inside this thing. He lived out his life in the bubble. The thing that struck me is that he was completely isolated from any human touch – even his parents couldn’t touch him except with heavy plastic gloves through sort of a port hole in the “bubble.”I think that it was the saddest part of that whole story.
Touch is a necessary nourishment for your soul, just as food and water are necessary nourishment for your body.
The human body depends on touch for healthy growth and development. This need for tactile interaction begins as soon as we’re born and it continues throughout out lives.
The reason I’m so passionate about holistic body therapy is that is truly an essential form of nourishment, and I love educating people about that and turning them onto it. I work from a belief that for therapeutic touch to be nourishing, it has to be nonjudgmental and focused. Contrary to popular belief, the intention of a good body therapist is not to heal or fix the person. Rather, its purpose is to create the optimal conditions for the body to heal and repair itself.
To touch and to be touched is to be part of the human race. I think of it as food for the soul. Movement and bodywork are an integral part of a holistic lifestyle.
Find a practitioner of body therapy in your local area and book an introductory session. You’ll be glad that you did. Remember to be adventurous and participate in your holistic body therapy. Its not something that’s done to you, you are there to contribute. Ask a lot of questions and enjoy the experience!
